6 Steps: How to Nurture Your Child to Become Confident, Focused, and Disciplined and Turn them into Happy Successful Adults
- Be a good finder.
- Use Praise – Correct- Praise
- Be Consistent
- Listen
- Set goals.
- Repeat
Step 1: Be a good finder. Energy flows where your focus goes. Whatever you want more of, recognize. The more the better. Point it out, and brag to your friends. There is always something you can point out that will help your child become more positive and confident.
Step 2: Praise - Correct – Praise. Simple but powerful. First, praise what you want more of. Praise effort, not the outcome. Then correct what needs to be corrected. Then praise the correction when you see it. Make this a habit and you will see the results quickly.
Step 3: Consistent in all things. This may be the simplest one. Just do what you say and say what you do. Hold yourself and them accountable. Never be wishy-washy. Kids learn from our behavior.
Step 4: Listen. Use proper listening skills. Not sure how? Look up active listening. But here is the fast method. Stop what you’re doing. Get on their level. Make eye contact. Let them finish. Ask questions and feed it back to them. Then answer them. Expect them to do the same for you.
Step 5: Set goals. Kids love to achieve. Help them out by setting small, achievable goals until they learn how to do it for themselves. This is critical for adulthood. Learning to plan for the future is not something most schools focus on.
Step 6: Repeat. Yep, keep at it until you master it.
These are some excellent steps for nurturing children to become confident, focused, and disciplined adults. By following these steps, parents and caregivers can help children develop important skills and qualities that will serve them well throughout their lives.
It's also important to remember that each child is unique and may respond differently to different approaches, so it's essential to be patient, flexible, and open to adjusting your methods as needed. The most important thing is to maintain a positive and supportive relationship with your child and to help them feel valued, loved, and encouraged as they grow and develop.
You should not have to tell your child a hundred times to get ready for bed. You should not be pulling your hair out because they don’t listen to you. You just need a plan. These 6 steps will work. How do I know? Because we use these (and others) to train our instructors on how to teach. We have been seeing results for over 35 years. It works. It’s proven. You just have to do it!
