Leadership - A Life Skill That Can Be Taught and Should
Posted: December 18, 2022
Hey parents, did you know that Martial Arts is a great way to build leadership skills for your child?
I think we can all agree that the world needs good leaders.
A child is going to be a leader or a follower. If they follow good leaders, then that’s okay. Even leaders are followers. But if they follow the wrong group of people then we have the potential for problems.
Bad peer groups and role models are the number one reason children underperform and get off track.
By teaching your child how to be a leader you are giving one of the biggest gifts you can give your child. Independent thought. The ability to make their own choices based on confidence and skill. Not just following the crowd.
Leaders are made. So, how do you help your child become a leader?
Just like any other skill. You teach it. You recognize it. You practice it.
We have a model at our martial arts school that helps kids become leaders. It is one step in our leadership program. It basically is, learning a skill, teaching the skill, and perfecting a skill. Basically, we put our young leaders in a position where they must teach what they learned. This does two things. First, it reinforces the skill which is great by itself. Then it puts the child in a leadership position where they must take what they have learned and teach it to someone else. They must learn communication, feedback, and learning systems. It levels them up.
We have a saying in our leadership training, a good teacher is a great student. In other words, when a person learns to teach, they learn how to learn. This increases their ability and comprehension.
If you want your child to succeed, help them out by teaching them how to be a leader. Put them in charge of things. Give them projects and tasks that are age appropriate. Then give them feedback so they will improve.
