Leadership is a Trait that Can be Taught

One way we make leaders is to give them goals. Then we hold them accountable. Then we make course corrections. We celebrate the victory! Then we do it again.
The problem is that most children don't get the opportunity to practice leadership. The school system is not in the business of making leaders. Not their job. Martial arts,, done right, is a great way for a child to learn what it takes to lead! First themselves, then others.
One way we do that is through our belt system. Each time they move up in rank they automatically have people they are responsible for that are newer than them. Then we have all the team drills in that everyone must participate and everyone must lead as well. Then there are the examples of great instructors.
We also have an awesome jr. instructor/leadership program that really turns followers into great leaders!
I love watching young people become leaders. It doesn't happen overnight, but it does happen. Here is Skylar from yesteryear (Orange belt) to today (jr. Instructor and Black Belt).
What an incredible young man!
Making a difference in his life and the lives of others on a daily basis.
