Perseverance and How to Get It
Posted: April 20, 2022
Perseverance is a word you often hear at our Martial Arts Academy, but do you really know what it means? This important word should be a part of your vocabulary, as well as your everyday life. Here's a closer look at perseverance, what it is, and how you can get it.
Perseverance - What is It?
First, it's important to understand the definition of perseverance. Perseverance is a personal quality that allows an individual to keep working to accomplish something, even if that becomes extremely difficult. This quality or characteristic also includes patience, hard work, commitment, and endurance. It involves repeatedly working at something. When you persevere, you never give up or quit, even if you really want to.
We all like to hear about people who won't quit. Stories of people that persevere inspire it, such as the Rocky movies, or for younger ones, The Little Engine That Could. Of course, this character trait shouldn't simply be admired among others - everyone needs to work on building perseverance in their own life.
Great Examples of Persevering
You know what perseverance means now, but to gain a better understanding of this character trait, it's important to look at some examples of perseverance. The following are some excellent examples that will help you better understand this characteristic.
- Studying for a test instead of watching television
- Spending a significant amount of time practicing and improving your martial arts
- Working extra hard to catch up at work or school after missing a day or two
- Starting a race and working to cross the finish line, even when you're tired
- Learning something new and never giving up, even when it's difficult
How to Get It
It is important that you learn to add perseverance to your life on a daily basis. After all, this character trait will help offer help in every area of your life for as long as you live. Of course, you may not be sure where to start. To begin practicing this characteristic in your own life, follow these steps.
- Step #1 - Talk to Yourself - Yes, it sounds funny, but talking to yourself and using that self-talk to ensure you don't give up can provide great results. When you feel like quitting, start falling back on self-talk to keep you going. For example, tell yourself, "I will finish this!" You could repeat, "I think I can, I think I can" or tell yourself, "Keep trying; you can do it!" Encouraging yourself to keep going will help you practice and achieve the ability to persevere.
- Step #2 - Set and Accomplish Goals - Another way to practice this character trait is to set goals for yourself and then work to accomplish them. Maybe you want to improve your performance in martial arts. Set a goal for yourself to improve your performance in martial arts over a set period of time, and then work hard at it and persevere until the goal is accomplished.
- Step #3 - Document Success - Every time you use perseverance in your life, document it in a journal or diary. When you feel discouraged, you can look back at all your successes and how persevering has helped you along the way. This will help you to continue using this characteristic.
If you would like to see how martial arts and how our Academy builds perseverance in our students, then I invite you to try a class out and see for yourself. It's FREE and there is no obligation or pressure to continue. Make your own mind up. The results will speak for themselves
