What Is the Hardest Martial Art Belt to Get?
Posted: February 04, 2025
If you ask most people what the hardest martial art belt is to earn, they’ll likely say the black belt. After all, the black belt is the ultimate symbol of mastery and dedication, right? It’s the goal many students set their sights on the moment they walk into a dojo. But here’s the truth: the hardest belt isn’t always the black belt.
For me, the most difficult belt wasn’t the one at the end of the journey—it was the one that almost made me quit. The belt where I struggled the most, doubted myself the most, and had to push through the hardest challenges. For me, that belt was blue belt.
The Unexpected Challenge of the Middle Ranks
When I started training in martial arts, every step forward felt exciting. The early belts came with a rush of progress—I was learning something new every class, seeing improvement every week, feeling like I was building momentum. But then I hit blue belt, and something changed.
Suddenly, the techniques got harder. The expectations were higher. The moves I was learning required more precision, more control, and more understanding of the art as a whole. It wasn’t just about showing up to class anymore; it was about mastering the details, refining my skills, and training my mind as much as my body.
To be honest, I hit a wall. For the first time in my martial arts journey, I found myself questioning whether I could keep going. I wasn’t sure I had what it took to make it any further.
The Moment You Want to Quit
Every martial artist has that moment. The moment where the excitement fades, the progress slows, and the grind sets in. Maybe it’s because the techniques get harder. Maybe it’s because life outside the dojo gets in the way. Maybe it’s because the novelty wears off, and you’re left with the reality that this journey is going to take serious work.
For me, blue belt was that moment. It wasn’t just about the physical difficulty—it was the mental battle. I felt stuck, frustrated, and unsure of myself. And that’s why I believe the hardest belt to earn isn’t the black belt. It’s the belt where you’re tempted to give up, but you don’t.
Why the Black Belt Isn’t the Hardest
Don’t get me wrong—earning a black belt is incredibly hard. It takes years of dedication, countless hours of training, and an unshakable commitment to the art. But by the time you’re working toward your black belt, something has shifted. You’ve already built the discipline. You’ve already proven to yourself that you can push through the hard times.
By the time I reached the point of training for my black belt, I had developed a mindset that wouldn’t let me quit. I knew how to keep going, even on the hard days. But back at blue belt? I didn’t have that yet. I was still figuring out what it meant to truly commit to something, even when it wasn’t fun or easy.
The Belt That Teaches You Resilience
The hardest belt isn’t the one at the end of the journey. It’s the one that tests your resolve. The one that makes you question whether you’re cut out for this. The one that forces you to dig deep and find the strength to keep going.
For some people, that belt might be yellow or orange, when the initial excitement wears off. For others, it might be green or purple, when the techniques get more complex and the training gets more intense. For me, it was blue.
What matters isn’t which belt it is. What matters is that you push through it. Because once you do, something amazing happens. You start to believe in yourself in a way you never did before. You realize that you’re capable of more than you thought. And that’s when the real growth begins.
The Hardest Belt Is the One You Conquer
If you’re struggling with your training right now, know this: you’re not alone. Every martial artist has been there. Every black belt has had that moment where they wanted to quit but chose to keep going instead.
The hardest belt is the one that challenges you the most, whether it’s your first belt, your middle belt, or your black belt. It’s the belt that forces you to decide what kind of martial artist—and what kind of person—you want to be.
For me, blue belt was my hardest test. But it was also the belt that taught me resilience. It was the belt that made me stronger, more disciplined, and more determined. And because of that, it’s the belt I’m most proud of.
So if you’re in the middle of your own struggle, remember this: the hardest belt is the one you want to quit at—but don’t. Keep showing up. Keep pushing through. Because on the other side of that struggle is a version of yourself you’ll be proud to meet.
And who knows? That might just be the moment when it all comes together.
