Martial Arts as a Family Bond: Training Together, Growing Together
Posted: February 24, 2025
Martial arts has always been more than just kicking, punching, or learning self-defense—it’s a bridge, a way to connect with family, and a unique opportunity to create lasting memories. For me, martial arts is deeply personal, not just because of the skills I’ve gained, but because of the relationships I’ve built along the way, especially with my family.
As a parent, I’ve spent my fair share of time sitting in the bleachers watching my kids participate in various school sports, cheering them on from the sidelines. Don’t get me wrong—those moments are special in their own way. But there’s something truly unique about martial arts: it’s one of the only activities where you can be on the mat together with your child. You can’t join your kid’s soccer team or jump into their swim meets, but with martial arts, you can share the journey side by side.
For me, I was fortunate to train with my daughter all the way to her earning her black belt at 17 years old. She practically grew up in the school, and the dojo became a second home for her—and for me. I still remember her very first class, the nervous excitement on her face as she tied her white belt for the first time. She was so determined, even as she struggled to get the moves just right. And I remember her first class as a teacher years later, standing on the mat with confidence, guiding others just as she’d been guided. Seeing her grow, not just in skill but in character, filled me with a pride I can hardly put into words.
Martial Arts as a Way of Life: What Keeps Me Motivated After 40+ Years
Posted: February 20, 2025
Martial arts has been a part of my life for over four decades. When people hear that, they often ask me, “How do you stay motivated for so long?” It’s a fair question, and one I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on. The truth is, my motivation doesn’t come from some superhuman willpower or a need to prove something to anyone else. It comes from the fact that martial arts isn’t just something I do—it’s who I am.
You see, martial arts stopped being an “activity” for me a long time ago. Activities are something you can quit when they get hard or when life gets busy. But when martial arts becomes a way of life, quitting is no longer an option—it’s part of who you are. You don’t quit life.
But let me explain what keeps me motivated, day after day, year after year, and why I believe martial arts can be a lifelong journey for anyone willing to embrace it.

What Are the Levels of Kempo?

In Kempo, the progression through levels represents much more than simply earning a new belt—it’s a journey of personal growth, discipline, and mastery of both body and mind. While many martial arts, including Kempo, use a belt-ranking system to signify skill level and experience, the true meaning of these levels goes far deeper. Each stage of development in Kempo reflects not only the acquisition of new techniques but also the refinement of character, perseverance, and understanding of the art.
At its core, Kempo follows a structured progression, beginning with the foundational level of White Belt and culminating at the level of Black Belt, with advanced degrees of Black Belt signifying greater levels of expertise and contribution to the art. While we won’t go through every belt in order, let’s explore the broader journey through the levels of Kempo and what they represent.
